In the past New Year Vacation, Macao was always crazy crowded, many tourists from Guangdong and other places in China flowed into this little place. The streets were filled with private cars and transit vehicles from different casinos. But under multiple times border closing and Covid inspection policy, Macao returns quite in this New Year, places where used to be nosie claim down now.

Macao island is a small place, with a lot of private properties standing along besides main avenue and other small alleys. Almost all of those private properties are built in the 60s or the 70s, having a strong contract with other modern buildings in Zhuhai and Cotai. Almost all the main streets are significantly narrower than streets in Zhuhai, back in normal days Macao island has severe traffic problems. Another view that Macao differs from Zhuhai is that Macao keeps a lot of slopes, and those buildings are built along with the slope, therefore we can see them raising one building after another. Every time I see a motorbike rushing toward a slope, I might wonder if it gets enough horsepower to carry its driver to the top.

Macau Light Rapid Transit

Macau Light Rapid Transit

Macao Light Rapid Transit, operated by a subsidy company of Hong Kong MTR, the MTR (Macao). This is the first rail line that operates within the Macao SAR territory. It connects Lotus Checkpoint Station, City of Dreams, the Venetian, the Parisian, the Londoner, and the airport. But strangely, its ticket machines only accept MOP in cash, and if trying to purchase a ticket with electronic payment, you need to go to a ticket office for help (most credit cards and QR code payment are accepted but AmEx is exclusive). HKD is not accepted both in the ticket machine and the ticket office. Currently MTR (Macao) has one hour limit after you enter paid area, therefore if you want to travel the whole line, you might need to pay attention to this.

The whole trip in Macao, besides the time in the casino, I could not find any other difference between Guangzhou or Shenzhen. All the shops, no matter grocery shops or restaurants, list all acceptable payments including WeChat pay, Alipay, Macao Pass, and MPay, but barely see payment systems like Visa and MasterCard. Waiters in Macao island do leave the preference of communicating in Cantonese, but when traveling to Cotai, all those services people speak in Mandarin. Even commercial advertisements, notice boards are written in simplified Chinese, and brands in the shopping mall are basically the same as those in China. These shopping malls, or even the whole of Macao, are becoming another tourist attraction for Chinese people, but their own characteristics, are fading out.

Hotel Lisboa

Attached with a photo of Hotel Lisboa, it is surrounding by many aged buildings or private properties, standing there like the only landmark of Macao. Back in the old days, Macao has its own attractions, like the fusion food with Canton and Portugal,  like the old buildings from the 70s, like the leisure lifestyle. But everything seems to fade out, only casinos remain unchanged and become the only name card of Macao.
